What is keepsake jewelry?

Keepsake jewelry is a special way to memorialize a moment or season in life. These pieces can help to remember and celebrate loved ones and events.

Have ashes and aren't sure what to do with them? Maybe you're looking for a keepsake to celebrate a momentous journey (flowers or breastmilk)? Sometimes we're also looking for a piece to remember those we love (a pregnancy test for angel babies, for example).

Whatever the reason, these cherished keepsakes can be kept near our hearts and seen or worn every day. Sometimes it can bring an extra moment of joy to the day, and other times, it can be an encouragement/reminder of a loved one during a harder season. Either way, it's a wonderful way to remember your treasured seasons in life.

What's an "inclusion"?

An inclusion is what you include (see what I did there) in your keepsake. This could be any of the following:

  • ashes
  • breastmilk
  • flowers (from a celebration, anniversary, birthday, etc)
  • birthstones
  • pregnancy test (I normally either use a small part of the cap, though I can also preserve the positive strip itself on request)
  • placenta capsules
  • hair
  • fur
  • opal shimmer
  • pearl shimmer

Wondering if you can include something in your keepsake that isn't listed here? Get in touch! I always love a good challenge.

Do you do custom pieces?

Absolutely! Some of the best keepsakes start with this very question. Send me a message through the Contact page and let's get started.

Whether you're looking for a different style of ring/necklace/bracelet or have a specific design in mind, I'd love to hear it!

Why sterling silver? Do you do solid gold too?

Sterling silver is a beautiful material that has a great balance between fine metal and affordability. I love that I am able to offer you beautiful pieces that you don't have to sell a kidney to buy!

Yes, sterling silver will inevitably tarnish as it oxidizes. The good news is that you can polish silver and it will be good as new! You can also store your piece in an airtight bag (provided in your order) to slow the tarnish process. As long as you follow the care instructions, your piece will last for years to come!

Yes, I do also offer my pieces in solid gold. The prices for this range from $325-$600+ depending on the options chosen (9K, 14K or 18K gold). Message me and let me know what styles you're looking at if interested in a solid gold option.

How much milk/ashes do you need?

Very little is needed unless you're hoping for an add-on like breastmilk soap or lotion (these options require 4-6oz).

All I need for a keepsake is 1/2 fl oz or 15mL of milk. I'll preserve it and any extra will be kept on file for 5 years, in case you decide to get a different keepsake!

For ashes, you just need to send 1/2 a teaspoon. Any extra/unused ashes will be sent back to you with your keepsake.

What if I don't have any ashes or milk to send?

No worries!

For milk, you can send in the formula you use for baby, or I can create a simulated milk for your piece. We also occasionally get donor milk to use for this very purpose! Every mother deserves something special to celebrate such a rollercoaster of a journey.

For ashes, we can use a shimmer pigment to color the stone used in your keepsake, or we can also add things of sentimental value like flowers, birthstones, favorite colors, etc.

I'm happy to brainstorm options and designs with you if it all seems overwhelming. Send me a message through my contact page and let's chat!

How do I place an order?

1. Choose your style: Do you want a ring, necklace, keychain, earrings, bracelet, or something else? Browse our products and see what you enjoy. If you want more options or have something else in mind, send me a message! Many current pieces start out as custom work.

2. Decide on your design elements: What do you want your keepsake to look like? Simple, complex, fun swirls, a specific shape in the design? Do you also want pearl shimmer, opal shimmer/glitter, colors, birthstones, flowers, foil, etc? Inclusions of your own (breastmilk, ashes, pregnancy test, clothing, umbilical cord, etc).

If you're overwhelmed with choices, I'm also happy to walk you through this process.

3. Place your order: Checkout with your chosen keepsakes and be sure to fill out all the notes and comments sections :)

4. Mail me your chosen inclusions: You will receive the address in your email once your order is placed. Send your inclusions labeled in ziploc bags with your order number. Breastmilk should always be double bagged and in breastmilk storage bags as these are more heavy-duty in the mail.

5. Play the waiting game as your keepsake is handmade for you: You can follow our order updates page (FAQs dropdown menu) to see where in the process your keepsake is! I will send you an email with shipping information when your keepsake is ready to go! Woohoo!

How do I send my inclusions to you?

Through regular ol' snail mail :)

Here are some steps to take to ensure your inclusions make it safely:

  • Label EVERY bag with your order number
  • Put your breastmilk into a labeled breastmilk storage bag, then put the breastmilk bag into a labeled ziploc bag. For extra safety, you can even triple bag it, though it's not necessary. Just make sure it's all fully zipped up!
  • Put any dry inclusions (placenta, umbilical cord, hair, etc) in a labeled ziploc bag
  • If mailing ashes, double bag for safety
  • Mail in a bubble envelope, readily available at the dollar store if you don't have one to re-use

TIP FOR HAIR: tie up a small amount (I don't need much) in a mini hair elastic/band before cutting to make sure all the hair stays together!

NOTE for Placenta + umbilical: I don't need much of this either, so don't worry about shipping the whole thing. Just break off a piece for me to use. I'll also send any extra/leftover back to you.

How do I know it's really my inclusions in the keepsake?

I have a very organized system and only work on one person's keepsakes at a time. This ensures that there is no cross-contamination of DNA or inclusions.

I will only include your milk or ashes and also work in a controlled environment to prevent anything else from entering your keepsake.

I often take behind-the-scenes photos of my work as I go and add them to my stories, so you'll be able to see my process as well!

When will my order ship?

Being a made-to-order product, keepsakes take a little longer than a traditional retail store. Our current processing time will always be updated on our website (see announcement bar above) as well as below.

Your order goes through a few stages:

  1. Order made: You will receive an email from me within 3 days of placing your order with instructions on how to mail your inclusions to me! If you can't find this email in your inbox, check your spam or contact me directly.
  2. Order sent to our metalsmith/jeweler: No more changes to the keepsake style! Your order has been forwarded to my metalsmith to be handmade. (Though I have personally made jewelry before, it is much faster through my silver/goldsmith, so I'll pass on that time savings to you so you get your order faster)!
  3. Inclusions preserved: In the meantime, once your inclusions arrive to me, I will preserve them to ensure they do not mold inside the keepsake. This gives peace of mind that your keepsake will stand the test of time.
  4. Keepsake finished: Your keepsake piece comes to my studio where I finish it with a stone filled with your inclusions and chosen design elements.
  5. Your Keepsake is mailed to you: Keep an eye on your mailbox! I'll also send an order update to give you shipping information!

CURRENT PROCESSING TIME: 4-6 weeks

Do you offer any discounts?

I price my keepsakes as reasonably as I can after all costs are taken care of, so that it can support my family but also be within reach for you.

Veterans and active military (with valid ID) can email me for a custom order discount code.

What is your return policy?

Due to the extremely customized nature of each handmade keepsake, returns and refunds are not accepted at this time. Should you have any issues with your keepsake, please contact me within 30 days of delivery.

Your keepsake order is placed with our silversmith and goldsmith partners after your order is made, and we work as quickly as we can. Partial refunds are only offered if you have not yet mailed your inclusions to me.

How do I care for my jewelry/keepsake?

Your care instructions will be mailed out with your order. As your keepsake is encased in resin to prevent contamination from outside sources, care will be a little different than with regular jewelry.

For sterling silver, avoid:

  • Water exposure (no shower, pools - this can cause your piece to tarnish)
  • Extreme heat (ex. don't leave in direct sunlight or a hot car)
  • Perfumes/lotion (take off your keepsake before applying these - we're mainly looking to avoid touching the stone with these)
  • Rough handling (though your keepsake is high quality and sturdy, it is also delicate jewelry and may be scratched or dented from harder materials like those found in dumbbells and granite countertops.)

For solid gold pieces, the care instructions are more of a vague guideline if you want your piece looking like new long-term, but solid gold is much hardier and can withstand more daily use.
